Author Visits
Melanie’s high-energy presentations can be tailored to the age of her audience and she’s happy to make them fun and interactive or in-depth and informative.
Each presentation is 50 minutes in duration with 10 minutes for Q&A.
For JK to grade 6, Melanie can offer a high-energy and exciting presentation about traditional storytelling and folktales, including a reading of her picture book, Stolen Words.
Melanie’s most popular visit for grades 7 to 12 is a serious but enlightening history of Canada’s Indigenous people and the residential school system, including its aftermath and intergenerational impact.
Melanie can also tailor a writing workshop to your group but her favourites are:
Character or Plot Development MasterClass - Want to know how to get started plotting a story and making it memorable? Want your characters to be remembered after your story is over? This class will have you developing your stories like a pro. With writing prompts and feedback included.
Exploring Your Culture Through Writing where the group will explore what culture means to them and with that knowledge, begin writing their own unique stories.
The Importance of a Good First Line, where Melanie and your students will look at famous first lines and talk about what makes them strong. Using a list of story prompts, Melanie will get the workshop participants writing their own stories.
All venues (classrooms, libraries, auditorium, gymnasiums etc.)
Equipment and other requirements: I like to use power point if possible– can bring my own laptop but will need a projector and screen.
